Lent Fund-raising Events : Lent has traditionally been the time that members of St. Mary’s have raised funds for the Church Army. For the past few years more people have taken part in fund-raising events so it has been possible to support both the Church Army and St. Mary’s. If you would like to host a Lent event you don’t have to invite the whole church to your home. Why not invite just a few friends and neighbours for coffee or afternoon tea?
So far there are 4 events planned. Liz & Barry Thompson start us off with a coffee morning on Tuesday 2nd March. Peggy Griffin, John and Julia Smith will serve refreshments & soup lunches in the Crypt on Monday 8th March. Mary Smith is inviting everyone to afternoon tea on Tuesday 16th March. Stan & Margaret Josephs and Mayla Saunders are having a coffee morning (at the Josephs) on Tuesday 23rd March.
Offers of home-made preserves, scones, biscuits, cakes and raffle prizes will be much appreciated. It will help us with our planning if you let event ‘organisers’ know what you are able to offer.
| The Kitchen Is Where It All Begins -and Ends : | Liz and Barry Thompson held the first of this Lent's fund-raising events on Tuesday 2nd March. It was a very busy morning as lots of supporters turned up.The home-made cakes and biscuits were absolutely delicious and very few people had given them up for Lent- or were perhaps giving themselves special dispensation for a good cause!
As well as everyone having a most enjoyable morning a total of £153 was raised. When the other Lent events have taken place all the money raised will go to the Church Army and St. Mary's Church funds.
Liz and Christine were photographed during one of their rare quiet times in the kitchen. | Home-grown Harvest. Calling All Would- be Growers : Please will you help us fill St. Mary’s with home-grown produce and make this year’s Harvest Festival Service extra special? Now is the time to be thinking and planning ahead. Ark Club and Little Ark Club are enthusiastic about the prospect of growing plants in plots, pots, and tubs and we hope that you too will take part and grow something especially for Harvest Festival. If you haven’t a garden it’s amazing what you can grow in a tub on a patio and even if you only have a window sill you can grow herbs, peppers…. Promises of produce will be gratefully received.
| PCC Meeting Monday 1st February : As ever, matters on the agenda ranged from maintenance to Mission-from leaking roofs to Lent groups. Leaking Roofs –leaks in the North and South aisles worsened in the bad weather. Earlier repairs to the North aisle have not solved the problem. Further inspection and work will be carried out. Church Heating -Work on the boiler controls appears to have been satisfactory so maintaining appropriate levels of church heating should not be a problem.
Church Lighting – Quotes received for installation of augmentery lighting in the nave were considered and one has been accepted. How it will be paid for has yet to be finalised.
Clerestory Window Repairs –the securing of Faculties is being dealt with. It is hoped there will be some grant aid to help with this major expenditure.
Mission –There was discussion of Lent events, Lent study, the Parish information leaflet (St. Mary’s Matters) and the Away Day to be led by Bishop Martin Wallace on Saturday 26th June.
The next PCC meeting is Tuesday 9th March and the Annual Parochial Church Meeting is Wednesday 24th March. It is hoped there will be a good turnout for the annual meeting.
